MacBook Air or MacBook Pro: which one should you buy?

The Air is enough for most people. Here is exactly when the Pro is worth the extra money.
The short answer
If your work is documents, browsing, email, light photo editing and video calls, the MacBook Air is the right machine. It is silent, thin, and the battery lasts a full working day.
The MacBook Pro earns its price in three situations: sustained heavy work such as video export or code compilation, a need for a brighter screen for colour work, and a need for more ports.
Cooling is the real difference
The Air has no fan. It is just as fast as the Pro for short bursts, but under a long export it slows down to stay cool. The Pro keeps running at full speed.
Screen
The Pro screen gets much brighter and handles HDR content properly. If you grade video or edit photos for print, this matters. If you write and browse, it does not.
Memory matters more than the chip
Most people are better served putting money into 24GB of memory on an Air than into a faster chip with 16GB. Memory is what makes a Mac feel fast three years from now.

- Student or office work: MacBook Air 13 or 15
- Photo editing and design: MacBook Air 15 with 24GB memory
- Video, 3D or software development: MacBook Pro 14 or 16
